As many of you well know, my home city of Brisbane, Australia and the surrounding areas have been hit by torrential flooding. Thousands and thousands of homes and people have been severely affected, some even losing their lives in the most tragic of ways. Although my partner and I were lucky to escape the rapidly rising floodwaters we are still feeling the pain and anguish of the many thousands who are homeless.

I ask you, all of my valued listeners, that you dig deep into your pockets and give what you can. Maybe you can hold off on buying that CD for a few more weeks and lend a hand in helping to get all these misfortunate families back into housing and help with the massive clean up.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated and would not be forgotten.

"The Electric 10!" With The Peep Tempel

The Peep Tempel. Most likely the coolest 2 guys walking around the streets of Melbourne. Or so I have heard. You've probably walked by them before and felt the coolness just knock you to the ground, or maybe you don't come out of your house and prefer to masturbate to pictures of Katy Perry.

I've got a feeling the Devil was pissed with the world's output of pre-conceived crap-pop music so he grabbed himself a blender, threw in some Jello Biafra, a dash of ball sweat from Jay Reatard, a large shlosh of Keith Richard's Insanity juice and a slightly chewed up Tennis Ball and concocted The Peep Tempel. Two men to take balls out rock back to where it should be; the top.

Here's what they had to say about themselves...........

1. So come on, who are you and what the devil do you do in this thing you call a 'band'?
Stevie Strikes, I play the drums as hard as I possibly can.

2. Where and when did you guys first get together?
Blake and I both live in North Melbourne and first got together for a jam during the great summer of 2009.

3. What is it about your music that makes it stand out from the rest of the crowd?
We are fucking hot, and we only rip off the best.

4. What song or songs are you most proud of?
Thank you Machiavelli and Boots on the bed, they are just the most spontaneous of our recordings so far.

5. Which bands have influenced your own personal style?
Bands like Dead Kennedys, Jay Reatard and Fugazi.

6. How is being a musician different than everyday life?
Doing something that you passionately enjoy doing and not getting paid for it.

7. Who do you think is the worst band member at practice?
Since I am answering this question I would have to say Blake and being a two piece he would probably say me.

8. Other than the people you play with now, if you could get any musician, dead or alive, who would you entrust to be in your “Dream Band”?
Jimi Hendrix

9. Which musician could you spend a year with on a deserted island, know that what they could teach you would excel your music career tenfold?
Keith Richards,he would be good for climbing palm trees and collecting coconuts.

10. Other than this interview, what is the stupidest thing you have ever agreed to do?
Doing a show at Mt Hotham after a mushroom tea and then snowboarding down the summit. It was my first time snowboarding.

Ahh, sixteen. I remember when I was sixteen. Half a lifetime ago and yet I still recall all the good things about being young and free. It was around this time that I really started to get right into music. I started to collect CD's until they were a sea of plastic cases on my bedroom floor, no CD being in it's right case. It was a magical time and though my collection has grown and become more 'organised', I still have that same feeling in my chest about music. "The Electric 10!" With Loon Choir

This week I hit up Ottawa band Loon Choir for the Electric 10 and boy did they have some words for me!! What a fantastic read this is!!

1. So come on, who are you and what the devil do you do in this thing you call a 'band'?

Derek - Nikki Yates plays keys and guitar and sings. Dan Larmour plays guitar and sings back up. Brad Sheffield plays synth and guitar, and writes songs as well. Jamie LeClair plays bass. Khary Byron plays drums. I am Derek Atkinson and I play guitar and I sing and write most of our songs. Collectively, we all have a say in how the band operates, the songs are written and the direction we are going in.

2. Where and when did you guys first get together?

Derek - Brad and I have been in basement/garage bands for about the last 10 years. Nikki, Brad and I started a fun little folk-electronic band in 2008 called Capital Hearts. In late 2008, Brad was practicing with a group including Jamie and Khary. Nikki and I joined and the former front guy left (must have been something we said). The group evolved into a six-piece when I replied to an ad that Dan posted on an Ottawa music forum looking to start or join a band. He fit in perfectly and the team was established. We started playing regular shows by that spring and were fortunate to open early on for bands like Ohbijou, The Lovely Feathers, Rubik and others.

3. What is it about your music that makes it stand out from the rest of the crowd?

Derek - While it is certainly difficult to stand out in a pack of so many great bands out there right now (and in our own back yards), we like to think that our music and lyrics offer something new and different. I consider my lyrics to be challenging of capitalist and pseudo-democratic systems while also reflecting on the mysteries and grace of nature and interpersonal relationships. The themes of ‘disconnection’ (from nature and each other) on one hand, and connection (unity, peace) have been fairly ongoing themes in my words which definitely strays from the less confrontational though popular themes in the lyrics of popular music of heart break, lust and material gratification.

4. What song or songs are you most proud of?

Nik - I think the song I'm most proud of on the album is Summerland because of the softer approach we took during the recording process. It's a complete 180 when you compare it to how we play it live, and I think that really speaks a lot about our versatility as both a band and individual musicians. I'm proud of the overall album though because I think we've melded together a lot of unique sounds and styles that aren't necessarily always categorized within the same genres. The outcome has resulted in 9 completely different tracks... to me it keeps our music interesting, and exciting.

5. Which bands have influenced your own personal style?

Nik - As the only female member in the band I personally gravitate toward other female musicians for inspiration and influence. Neko Case has had a huge influence on me,
along with Leslie Feist, Emily Haines, and Tracyanne Campbell. As a whole, I think we collectively draw from larger bands out there such as Broken Social Scene, and Arcade Fire as a means of continuously challenging ourselves, to keep expanding our sound and using our collective creativity to its fullest potential.

6. How is being a musician different than everyday life?

Nik - I know for me, not only being a musician but 1 of 6 within a band is different from everyday life because I'm just a part of that whole. Whereas in real life we tend to go about things ourselves and decide what is best individually, in the band we're forced to consider all the angles, as well as everyone's perspective... the philosopher Emile Durkheim refers to a feeling that he calls "collective effervescence"... and it’s the idea of something sacred being produced by a group of people all coming together to believe in the same thing... and I think as musicians, we encounter this feeling more so than in everyday life through the process of creating music with others, and it really offers a sense of togetherness and peacefulness that isn't always present elsewhere.

7. Who do you think is the worst band member at practice?

Derek – I think Dan is the worst member at practice. He’s always trying to touch my thighs and making funny noises. Ha. Just kidding. Our little democratic republic is so top notch that when it comes to communicating our ideas and being productive there’s really no hierarchy of ‘suck’ here. But, ya, Dan.

8. Other than the people you play with now, if you could get any musician, dead or alive, who would you entrust to be in your “Dream Band”?

Derek – Thom Yorke, Kevin Drew, Hank Williams, Jónsi Birgisson and Chet Baker would be a pretty cool dream band. We’d probably suck though if I had anything to do with it and getting along with that many personalities might be a difficult task too. And I would probably have to play bass I guess, and that wouldn’t be that cool either. Oh, drums: Art Blakey!

9. Which musician could you spend a year with on a deserted island, know that what they could teach you would excel your music career tenfold?

Derek – I would love to learn trumpet more, and to sing better so Chet Baker would be pretty rad to hang with and learn from. He liked to party (too much) so we would likely get along. His voice was so silky and trumpet so flawless! In terms of living musicians though, while I don’t think he would like me, and maybe I wouldn’t like him, his voice and capacity for epic song writing is so huge that I would have to say Thom Yorke.

10. Other than this interview, what is the stupidest thing you have ever agreed to do?

Derek – Obviously avoiding getting into anything too personal, as there is definitely a lot worse things I have agreed to do, after thinking for about 30 seconds about this, I’ll give you a small (and sketchy) window into my life. I once agreed in Belize to go to a crack dealer’s house (ps - I don’t use or condone the use of crack). My anxiety/paranoia was going ballistic (and with good cause too). There were large ‘body guards’ there, it was really dark inside and nobody was talking much (besides the brief introductions and questions the guys had of the infamous cannabis that comes from British Columbia). I told them what they wanted to hear. In the end, I left unharmed and enjoyed watching Dumb and Dumber in a completely different setting, but felt really uncomfortable and was glad to get back to the beach and play some barefoot basketball with my friend Dege.

"8mm - Love And The Apocalypse" Review

First up, if you have don't have a copy of this album then I suggest you get your hands on one as soon as you can. 8mm sure produce the goods on their recently released 'Love And The Apocalypse'. Sultry, swooning pianos attack softly summoned beats on every track here and quite rightly, it works. Throw in the graceful melodic tones of Juliette Beavan and you have a crisp, comfortable lazy Sunday afternoon on the front porch sipping Long Island Iced Tea's whilst being stolen by the moment. Every track on here has an epic moment of it's own accord, slowly building up the emotional attachment for the listener. Personal favourite track, 'Life Is Good', just goes to show how the Husband and Wife team of Sean and Juliette pull together to bring out the best in each other. This is a great album and worth the 19 minutes playtime. Hey, short and sweet and hard to beat. That just means you get to listen to it over and over again.

This weeks Electric 10 comes from a very electric band that I have only recently found out about and let me tell you, they are quite the addictive sound! Check out what Ali had to say about this and that right here!

1. So come on, who are you and what the devil do you do in this thing you call a 'band'?

My name is Ali and I play bass in this Beyond This Point Are Monsters. We're not a 'band', we're a conundrum to ourselves, a miss-shapen stream of consciousness. A mess.

2. Where and when did you guys first get together?

Rob, Robin & Bazz started the band many years ago whilst they were still in college. The band has gone through a few line-up changes since then, but the current line-up was confirmed when Luke joined as third guitarist four years ago and I replaced the last bass player two years ago. I think this is as solid a line-up as we've ever had.

3. What is it about your music that makes it stand out from the rest of the crowd?

Erm...in reality probably nothing, we're extremely proud of the music we play, but conscious enough to know that we're not reinventing the proverbial wheel. If anything we avoid the traditional song structure of verse/chorus/verse, we almost never repeat part of a song twice, each idea leads into another like Joyce's stream of consciousness. I'd like to think this makes us a little bit more interesting to watch/listen to than your standard slow building instrumental post rock outfit. But maybe that's just me...some people like music that's five ways to play the same riff.

4. What song or songs are you most proud of?

Personally I love all the new tracks we've written since I've joined the band, we have to be to be honest, each track takes about 5-6 months to write and if we're not totally happy with a track then it won't leave the practice room. We're all perfectionist in one way or another and this makes writing a tiring and frustrating process but in the end when a track is done we know its the best it can be. Meggie Miyagi, which is on our split release with fellow Derbian's Alright The Captain, is the only new track we've released so far but its good example of what we're about now.

5. Which bands have influenced your own personal style?

Each band member has wildly different musical tastes to be honest so I can't speak for the group but personally I take a lot of influence (i.e. steal bass lines) from Hip-Hop bands such as Dalek and Subtle. When it comes to bass playing I detest the sort of fretboard wankery people such as (to give an example) Flea are guilty of, bass should be a simple, solid backing to music, not the main focus.

6. How is being a musician different than everyday life?

I guess it's main difference is simply that its not everyday life. Plus you can start drinking at midday on tour...

7. Who do you think is the worst band member at practice?

The one who starts playing Smells Like Teen Spirit everytime he gets bored. I'm mentioning no names...

8. Other than the people you play with now, if you could get any musician, dead or alive, who would you entrust to be in your “Dream Band”?

If I could get Tom Waits, Ornette Coleman and Frederick 'Toots' Hibbert in a room together we'd change the world...

9. Which musician could you spend a year with on a deserted island, know that what they could teach you would excel your music career tenfold?

Charlie Haden, who was Ornette Coleman's bassist, I think a year would be long enough for him to teach me how to play double bass.

10. Other than this interview, what is the stupidest thing you have ever agreed to do?

We did an acoustic set once of stuff off of Family Tree (our debut album), that was a pretty bad idea, we're just too rock 'n' roll for it...

Hey Folks!

Welcome to the first of many Electric interviews with some of the artists I have found to love! Every now and then I will be dropping 10 questions on an artist or band that has taken my fancy and relaying the answers back to you, my faithful readers!

First up we have the gorgeous Courtenay Green, otherwise known as See Green. Check out what she had to say right now!!

1. So come on, who are you and what the devil do you do?

I’m Courtenay Green, but I perform as See Green. Which also sort of refers to the band that accompanies me for live shows. I suppose I would describe the music as a hydra-headed monster with indie, pop, rock and other sub-genres represented. I write/arrange the songs and play a bunch of instruments, but for shows I sing and mainly play guitar.

2. Where and when did you first start playing music?

I started playing music at home in New York when I was about six. My brother was taking piano lessons and my parents both played guitar, and both of those activities seemed more fun than whatever I was doing at the time. Which probably involved My Little Ponies and a formidable Care Bear collection.

3. What is it about your music that makes it stand out from the rest of the crowd?

Recording it in 3D, for starters. Ok, I lie. But I do think my music is unusual in that it’s difficult for people to describe exactly what it sounds like. I borrow from a tremendous number of influences, spanning many decades, but I’m proud of the fact that like them or not, no one’s ever called my songs “derivative.” They’re sort of like a musical Rorschach test in that people hear what they want to hear in them, yet at the same time, they’re accessible, fun and put people in a good mood. Or at least I like to think that.

4. What song or songs are you most proud of?

This is probably a lame answer, but I’m proud of all of them, even if it’s in different ways.

5. Which bands or artists have influenced your own personal style?

I think the better question is which bands/artists HAVEN’T. I listen to and take bits and pieces from everything, whether it’s Bach or Traffic or The Hollies or Blondie or the Carter Family or The Buzzcocks or Broken Bells. Basically anything with a good melody and a sound I like. I guess I don’t borrow a whole lot from death metal. That I can say fairly definitively.

6. How is being a musician different than everyday life?

I’m not sure if I could separate “being a musician” from “everyday life.” It IS everyday life, since it’s what I do every day- for better or for worse.

7. Do you practice by yourself or do you like to have some other musicians around for feedback and support?

I’m very much a loner in that respect. I practice/write and do pretty much everything by myself, and only involve other people for live shows, rehearsals and recording. But there’s definitely feedback in rehearsals and at the studio. I’m not an autocrat, more like an oligarch who just happens to make most of the decisions for the group. Ok, maybe I’m an autocrat.

8. Other than the people you play with now, if you could get any musician, dead or alive, who would you entrust to be in your “Dream Band”?

I’m quite confident that Kenny G could rustle up some mean saxophone riffs for me.

9. Which musician could you spend a year with on a deserted island, knowing that what they could teach you would excel your music career tenfold?

I think Debbie Harry could teach me a thing or hundred about being generally awesome. That woman has presence. But if you’re talking strictly technical, I wouldn’t mind a year of guitar lessons from Pete Townshend.

10. Other than this interview, what is the stupidest thing you have ever agreed to do?

On a dare in high school, I agreed to put an entire jar of this Vaseline-like pomade in my hair. No matter how often I washed it, it looked like it was wet and greasy for nearly a month- a month that included my senior prom. Let’s just say that isn’t great for any 17-year-old girl’s stock.

"No Kids - Judy At The Grove EP" Review

I can feel it. I can feel the love in these tracks from start to finish. Vancouver, BC group No Kids have found a sound that makes them stand out. A slightly funkier feel than previous efforts, Judy At The Grove is an amazing piece of work. There is a certain sort of soulfulness that really grabs your attention and puts that groove in your step. Second track in, "I Want To Be Around" is a dazy slow ride full of funk and fun while "The Jazz Singer" has an eclectic, even slightly Scissor Sisters sound to it and is brought to life with an array of instruments that any Indie band would be proud to call their own. I'm pretty impressed with this band and will definitely be following their whereabouts on the off chance that I will get to see them live. If they can even come close to what they can produce in the studio then I guarantee their live shows would be a hoot!! Don't miss out on hearing this one!!

Hey peeps,

Just thought I'd pop in an give you all an update on the happenings at the MonthlyIndieMixtapes office. Well when I say office I really mean wherever I can find a place to park my butt for a few hours!

As you can see MIM has had a revamp. Nothing too major that is going to scare you all away but enough to give this site a bit of character and a bit more modernisation. The layout is basically the same though so all your mixtapes and "Video Of The Week" will still be very easy to find.

In the near future, MIM will be looking into new avenues to pursue. A few more album reviews and even some track reviews will become more and more common, whilst if I can snaffle a few up, I will be including some interviews.

But the real big news is this. MonthlyIndieMixtapes will be working towards a monthly Podcast!! Nothing over the top but just something that gives you a little taste test of what to expect on the upcoming mixtape.

So there you have it folks, a little bit of what is in the pipeworks for MIM. I hope you are excited as I am! If not well I'll jsut have to convince you otherwise.

Snow & Voices Album Review.

Slightly haunting, slighty deep. The new album from Los Angeles duo Snow & Voices is a breath of fresh air for this listener. Echoing vocals take centre stage with bellowing piano melodies which magically twist and weave within each other. Lead singer Lauri Kranz has a voice to die for. Think Imogen Heap meets Dido and you would probably have hit the nail on the head. Such is her voice the listener is encaptured with every single note and these days that is getting rarer to find. Tracks like "Everything Coming Apart" and the track that got my attention "I Am A Storm" are great examples of how pulsating rythyms can emphasise such a delicate voice. With strong bass lines and tantalising dream pop like guitar riffs handed to you on a platter from Jebin Bruni, you find yourself floating above the music looking down at the notes as they drift on pass as if they were boats on a river. The new album, "Anything That Moves" is a moving collection of well structured, well written alternative pop tunes that is sure to grab your attention. If you do one thing right this year, make sure it's checking out this band. You won't regret it.

The Sun & Earth
March Tour Dates Announced

QRO Magazine, in a review of their newest release "The Sun & Earth", says "If you don’t like pop, Middle Distance Runner might just change your mind" and "full of elastic creativity that plays off accepted idioms with an ease and fluency that most bands would kill for."

"MDR’s sound clearly draws on mid-’90s British rock — think pre-OK Computer Radiohead, Blur, Oasis — and exudes a confidence and professionalism that many young bands lack.” – Washington Post

With a blend of tuneful pop-inspired indie-rock and darker, heavier layered guitars, Middle Distance Runner have been cited by Paste Magazine as “on the verge of something big” and heralded by SPIN as “insanely catchy.” The band completed The Sun & Earth earlier this year and joined Engine Room Recordings’ roster in July.

Formed by four high school friends in 2005, Middle Distance Runner self-released their debut album, Plane in Flames in 2006. A 2008 self-titled EP followed. Most recently, the band released their new album, The Sun & Earth. The video for the “The Unbeliever,” a stop-motion animation piece created by Philadelphia-based filmmaker Maxwell Sorenson, garnered early exposure for the band on MTVu, The Tripwire, and Fuse.tv among other outlets.

Well it's coming to that time of year where people all over this vast planet of ours start to make lists. Good morning, good morning!!

The 1st day of December is upon us and so is the last MonthlyIndieMixtape for the year. It's been a great year for Indie music and I've had a blast of a time sharing the best of what I come across. I for one have found some bands that I will call favourites for the rest of my life and I hope you have too. It's just amazing how many bands and artists out there can still make moving music when a lot of music feels like it has gone stale. The Knife Show - Eating Pebble

What can I say about Eating Pebble's new album 'The Knife Show'? Well to be honest, plenty. After displaying their sounds on 2008's 'Sammi! Oh, Sammi!' EP the boys are back with a full album and let's just say that it is damn good! Full of catchy lyrics and even better guitar hooks Eating Pebble have discovered a sound that suits their style and let's the listener engage and emerge themselves in the stories as if they were their own. Be it from the driving bass lines on 'All Her Soldiers Gone To France' to the meloncholy lyrics on 'Close Your Eyes, Shout!', the boys have something to scream about.

When I asked Mattias (the guy with the cool hair who plays lead guitar) how The Knife Show came about, he simply replied, "I believe it just happened as a necessary result of trying to write the best songs in the world. I'm not being big headed, I just think that if you don't try to do that, you shouldn't be in a rock'n'roll band". Honest words from a guy who makes honest music. Honest to God rockin' Indie music.

So personally I am captivated by The Knife Show. It's been far too long since a band has delivered on their word and released a straight up rock record straight from the heart, and if these boys continue making the sounds that they do then there is no limit to what they can achieve.

FINALLY!!!!

See what happens when life gets in the way? You completely lose track of everything else and struggle to fit your passions into your busy lifestyle. Well my friends, I have finally found that time. It's taken me around a month to get back on track but here I am with the 10th installment of The Week In Sound Mixtape.

Now I've been having a think about it and in all reality this mixtape may have to turn into a monthly thing. I just don't have the time to search for all this great music during the week so if I make this a monthly endeavour then we are more likely to get the good stuff and not just any old song that I find laying around. I will have a think about my options in the next few days. I already know that there are a few monthly playlists getting around so is it really worth having another? I say it is but is that what the public want. Only time will tell.

So without wasting your time any longer, I FINALLY introduce the 10th and possibly final 'weekly' mixtape.

Ape School's Michael Johnson wraps his catchy songs in a hazy, insulated sound that references neo-psych heroes Mercury Rev and the Flaming Lips, ropes in elements of hip-hop (in the rhythms), shoegaze (the drifting textures are reminiscent at times of the Lilys best work), and oddly enough, a shoestring budget version of stadium dreamers like Coldplay or Keane.

The Bicycles - B-B-Bicycles
The four piece pop perfectors from Toronto, The Bicycles, are known for their sparkly live shows filled with catchy two minute tunes that’ll get your heart racing.

Foreign Born - Early Warnings
Foreign Born began in San Francisco shortly after Matt Popieluch and Lewis Pesacov became roommates. They’d first met a few years earlier in a university piano practice-room, jamming out to the classic strains of “Sunny Afternoon.” Many years and projects later, they found themselves in Los Angeles, where they hooked up with Lewis’ old high school pal, Ariel Rechtshaid and his accomplice, drummer Garret Ray. They played together for only one weekend and thus Foreign Born was, er- born.

Hopewell - Island
After more than a decade of continuous releases, Hopewell has become an institution in the indie space rock scene. Weathering music industry collapse, stylistic shifts and near fatal personal conflicts, the tenacious band continues to pump out genre defying music to critical acclaim.

Jenny Owen Youngs - Led To The Sea
Jenny Owen Youngs is a feisty, hyper-sensitive, disease-free singer/songwriter/former girl scout who wants to be your friend. Claiming influences from Beck to Jesus Christ Superstar to Britney Spears, her music is an echo of Erin McKeown hopping into Jeff Buckley¹s Pontiac, cruising backwoods Alabama red dirt roads and singing along to The Sundays and Nick Drake. Her songs straddle the heart-wrenching and the tongue-in-cheek and say giddyup.

The Lightning Seeds - All I Do
Lightning Seeds are an alternative pop band, largely the brainchild of writer, singer and guitarist Ian Broudie (born 4th August 1958 in Liverpool, England). The band currently consists of Broudie (vocals, guitar), Ali Kane (keyboards), Martyn Campbell (bass) and Simon Rogers (percussion).

Little Birdy - Brother
Little Birdy is an australian, four piece rock band from Perth. The band formed in 2002 when songwriter, singer and guitarist Katy Steele left her former band the plastik scene. She joined with Simon Leach on guitar, Scott (‘Barney’) O’Donoghue on bass, and Matt Chequer on drums.

Magic Arm - Daft Punk Is Playing At My House
Magic Arm - who, in 2009, you will see erroneously described as a singer-songwriter; laptop-folk troubadour; and more - is otherwise known as Marc Rigelsford. Like Beck, Beta Band or Adem, Magic Arm is a sonically curious soul who fuses folk, rock and effervescent electronics. But, as reference points, none of those three quite hit the spot.

The Meligrove Band - Planets Conspire
The Meligrove Band are a Canadian indie rock band, based in Toronto, and consisting of Jason Nunes on vocals, guitar and piano, Darcy Rego on vocals and drums, and Michael Small on bass guitar.

Passion Pit - To Kingdom Come
Passion Pit is an American electro band from Cambridge, Massachusetts. Formed in 2007, the group consists of Michael Angelakos (lead vocals/keyboards), Ian Hultquist (keyboards), Ayad Al Adhamy (synth/samples), Jeff Apruzzese (bass) and Nate Donmoyer (drums).

The band’s debut Chunk Of Change EP (originally intended as a Valentine’s Day gift from Angelakos to his girlfriend) was released on September 16th, 2008 .

Piers Faccini - Your Name No More
Piers Faccini began his music career in London in the band ‘Charley Marlowe’, which he fronted alongside the poet Francesca Beard. In 2001, the band ended and Piers started solo work. He writes music for television - notably the BBC docudrama ‘Killing Hitler’ - as well as painting. His style is rhythmic and melodic. His album is mostly based around acoustic guitar riffs, whereas his earlier music and TV themes reflect his interest in dance music.

Viva Voce - Good As Gold
A Portland, OR based duo & married couple, Viva Voce have an extremely diverse sound. The music captures both the sweet and the melancholy, with comparisons ranging from the fey pop antics of Belle & Sebastian to the transcendental cinematics of the best Grandaddy. Their sound seems far more expansive than that of a simple duo, and are currently seeking soundtrack & commercial work through their agents at Bank Robber Music.

The Woodlands - Asleep In September
The Woodlands are a wife and husband duo from Portland, OR that craft intimate indie folk-pop songs of lyrical poetry, lush melody, and intelligent simplicity. Hannah & Samuel churn beauty spun of melancholy and mirth, conjuring faraway lands and the longing of lovers. It is the allure of song and sound, wrapped in the hauntingly sweet hush of wonder…

The Working Title - Physical Love
The Working Title was five members, then they were four members, then they were three members, then they were two members, and then there was one.

The remaining member is the ever-determined mastermind of Joel Thomas Hamilton.

Zee Avi - Monte
Zee Avi, also known as Koko Kaina, is a singer/songwriter from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She is best known for her Christmas song No Christmas for me, which became a YouTube success in 2007.

Hi gang!

First of all let me apologise for being late. I scored myself a job and since it is a 5am to 5pm affair, that's including travel, the Week In Sound mixtapes will have to come whenever i get a chance now. Hold those tears, it will all be ok.

In this volume I have featured a few Australian artists who have new releases. I always enjoy listening to the new Australian stuff as it makes me feel like I'm back home. Australia has some wonderful undiscovered talent. Actually, while I'm at it, I'll throw you a link. The site is called Triple J Unearthed and it is a site that allows bands and artists from all over Australia to upload their music and share with the world. You can vote for songs that you like and you can even download tracks from the artists pages.

So anyway, back to what we are all here for, the 9th Mixtape!! Lets have a bit of a geezer and see what lucky bands have made it onto the list.

Bertie (Beatrice) Blackman (born 1982) is an Independent Australian singer, songwriter and guitarist. Taking inspiration from an eclectic array of musicians such as Björk, Erykah Badu, Suzanne Vega, Joni Mitchell, and Radiohead, Bertie's songs are at once heartfelt and uniquely her own.

Bob Evans - Pasha Bulka
Kevin Edward Mitchell, is an Australian musician, most famous for his role as vocalist/guitarist for the band Jebediah. Kevin Mitchell often performs his solo work under the pseudonym of Bob Evans. He plays Beatle-esque pop songs about love and life.

Deer Tick - Art Isn't Real (City Of Sin)
Deer Tick is an American rock band from Providence, Rhode Island led by guitarist and singer-songwriter John McCauley.[1] The band began as McCauley's solo project in December 2004. Within a few years he had acquired a strong following through constant touring in parts of the Atlantic Northeast and self-released CD-Rs. Deer Tick's music has often been described as a combination of folk, blues, and country with a strong grunge influence. McCauley is known for his distinct gruff-sounding voice.

Dogs Die In Hot Cars - Like Music To My Ears
Dogs Die in Hot Cars are a Scottish band which became popular in the UK and international music scene around the same time as Biffy Clyro and Franz Ferdinand. The band's name comes from a RSPCA campaign to advise dog owners not to leave their pets in hot cars and has often been a strong talking point of polarized views. In an interview with U.S. Rolling Stone magazine, singer/guitarist Craig Macintosh mentioned that "Rolling Stone in Australia said it was the best band name in the history of rock & roll. But then the NME said it was the worst".

Eskimo Joe - Foreign Land
Eskimo Joe is an Australian rock band. Eskimo Joe formed in 1997 in Fremantle, Western Australia. Kavyen 'Kav' Temperley (bass/vocals), Joel Quartermain (guitar) and Stuart MacLeod (guitar) formed a band to compete in the Australian National Campus Band Competition.

Halloween, Alaska - In Order
Halloween, Alaska is a Minnesota-based band consisting of James Diers (voice, guitar, keys), Jake Hanson (brother of Tapes 'n Tapes drummer Jeremy Hanson, guitar), Matt Friesen (electric bass guitar), and David King (acoustic and electronic drums). Members of the group are or have been part of the bands The Bad Plus, Love-Cars, Happy Apple, 12 Rods, Cowboy Curtis, Minneapolis Dub Ensemble, and The Gang Font feat. Interloper.

Montt Mardié - Elisabeth By The Piano
Montt Mardié (born David Olof Peter Pagmar on September 16, 1983) is a Swedish singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and composer. As of November 2007, Montt Mardié has released two full length albums as well as various singles under the Swedish record label Hybris. His first released studio album was Drama (Montt Mardié album) in 2005.

My Latest Novel - Lacklustre
My Latest Novel are a Scottish band, from Greenock & Gourock. They augment the traditional rock line up of guitars, drums, bass and keyboards, with the use of violins, xylophones and undulating percussion, as well as multi-part vocals. Their musical style is notable for its contrasting melancholic and uplifting moods, the unusual use of the spoken word, and by surprising mid-song changes in tempo and atmosphere.

New Ruins - Symptoms
New Ruins began in 2004 as a home recording project of Elzie Sexton and J.Caleb Means. They have been compared to: Band of Horses, Sun Kil Moon, Modest Mouse, The National, My Bloody Valentine, TV on the Radio.

Red Red Meat - Buttered
Red Red Meat was a '90s Chicago-area blues-influenced alternative rock band. After their break-up, frontman Tim Rutili went on to form Califone, for which many of Red Red Meat's former members, including producer Brian Deck, often record and perform. Tim Hurley went on to form Sin Ropas.

The Rural Alberta Advantage - The Deathbridge In Lethbridge
The Rural Alberta Advantage is a Canadian indie rock band that formed in 2005. Based in Toronto, Ontario, the band consists of Paul Banwatt, Amy Cole and Nils Edenloff. First formed in 2005, the band released a demo tape and an EP independently before completing their first full-length album, Hometowns, in early 2008.

Ryan Driver - When Were You In Mexico?
Ryan Driver is a member of The Silt, The Reveries, Deep Dark United, St. Dirt Elementary School, Double Suicide, The Draperies, The Fake New Age Music Band, Blah Blah 666, The Guayaveras, The Ryan Driver Quartet, N, Cluttertones, and The Everytime Band, sometimes singing, sometimes playing piano, sometimes pieces of balloons, sometimes flute, sometimes analog synth, sometimes guitalele, sometimes street-sweeper bristles, sometimes guitar.

Too Soft - Bubble Gum
Too Soft are an Indie/Folk/Pop/Acoustic duo straight out of France. I haven't been able to find out much about them but I do know that their music is great. Hopefully we get to hear and learn more about them in the future.

We Were Promised Jetpacks - Moving Clocks Run Slow
We Were Promised Jetpacks are a four-piece rock band, formed in Edinburgh, United Kingdom in 2003 by high school friends Adam Thompson (Guitar/Vocals), Michael Palmer (Guitar), Sean Smith (Bass) and Darren Lackie (Drums). This shit could/should go places... a clever guitar pop record to usher in the new warmer weather.

White Belt Yellow Tag - You're Not Invincible
Justin Lockey is surely one of the north-east's most prolific music-makers. As well as his production work for the likes of This Ain't Vegas and Catweasels, he was quick to establish new outfit The British Expeditionary Force after his former group, yourcodenameis:milo, broke up. It seems Lockey's itchy feet have struck again with the formation of his latest band, White Belt Yellow Tag. This new project finds him moving on from the mechanised tones of yourcodenameis:milo and the prog-rock of The British Expeditionary Force, instead channelling his obvious love of post-punk into melodious pop. What does remain is his penchant for richly textured sounds.

Super stuff hey? Yessums. There is some great stuff in there and it gets me all excited to know that Eskimo Joe's new record is just around the corner. I love them guys!

Well anyways, I'm off to find some more wonderful music for you guys to go in the 10th mixtape which will arrive sometime next week. Not too sure when but I guarantee it will be done.

Howdy all!

Welcome to the newest mixtape!! Boy the weeks go by quickly don't they? It feels just like yesterday that I started these mixtapes and now we are up to number 8!! In my opinion this is the best one yet. I've decided to add a little more this time around. 15 songs instead of 12. 15 artists instead of 12. Plus when you add your mixtape to your music player, be it iTunes or whatever else you choose to use, they are grouped much better. Just look at the song info and you will notice that the grouping will be for the current week's mixtape. It just makes it a little easier to manage.

The City And Horses - Abigail Adams
The City and Horses play catchy indie pop, literate lo-fi folk, earnest country ballads, electro-sex dance, grunge rock and Mo-Town fop. The members of the band are adorable and can fit in your pocket.

Jeniferever - Ox-Eye
Jeniferever is a band from Uppsala, Sweden formed in 1996. Their music could be described as ambient indie rock or post-rock; it is slow-paced, melodic, and frequently building to an orchestral-like climax. Their sound has been compared to bands such as The Appleseed Cast and Sigur Rós.

Lady Of The Sunshine - White Rose Parade
Lady Of The Sunshine is Angus Stone’s (from Angus & Julia Stone) solo project. Angus Stone reveals a darker more contemplative side on the brooding rhythm and blues of his first solo album ‘SMOKING GUN’.

Manchester Orchestra - I've Got Friends
Inspired by the pounding, primal assault of Weezer’s Pinkerton , Nirvana’s In Utero , and Foo Fighters’ The Colour and the Shape , this young band has created its own version of what a classic rock album should sound like, complete with fiercely beautiful melodies, shifting guitar and keyboard textures, loud/soft dynamics, and an urgency in each band member’s performance, especially Hull’s cathartic vocals.

Matteah Baim - Pagoda
Matteah Baim, the non-CocoRosie affiliated half of Metallic Falcons has forged on without Sierra Casady to create an album of disparate, haunted folk songs that loll over your senses like desert clouds. With the help of a few friends (Jana Hunter, Devendra Banhart, Rob Doran) she has taken her palate of lonesome inky textures and blown it dry with a wanderer’s spirit. Her songs ring with a wounded sense of femininity and mournful charm that here furthers the tones her past work.

An Orange End - Homo Consumers
Purple walls, blue lights, a curtain and a chemical reaction. There were just two in that room. A noise marionette! A melody somnambulist! And they had nothing to bridge… but lot to share, lot to see…The wind started singing a new story. And the window opened… Gazing out the peaceful fields, all they saw was empty roads and the fabulous orange lights above! The road had no end! Patrick Watson - Tracy's Waters
Patrick Watson (born 1979) is a Canadian singer-songwriter, whose blend of cabaret pop and classical music influences with indie rock has been compared to Rufus Wainwright and Jeff Buckley.

Redjetson - Questions I Don't Want To Ask
Redjetson are an UK based post-rock band who have been influenced by a diverse selection of bands including Interpol, Slint, Radiohead, Joy Division, Explosions in the Sky, My Bloody Valentine, Sigur Rós, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, The Doors & Mogwai.

Rubik - Goji Berries
Combining hysterically schreeching guitars and twisted pop melodies with almost ambient-like soundscapes, their music is truly worth noting. music for hearts, head, soul and feet. You decide.

St. Vincent is the band of singer-guitarist-composer Annie Clark. An inventive and versatile guitarist, Annie has played with avant-garde composer Glenn Branca and was a member of symphonic pop spectacle The Polyphonic Spree.

Wentworth Kersey - The Death Of Anthony Gonsalves
Frontier man, Wentworth Kersey, is an ambient americana sci-fi folk artist from Denver. Mister Kersey began his musical career while playing “A Soundtrack for Suicide” at the “Youth Hipster Halfway House” during a lost era of western greatness. Currently he enjoys drinking coffee, eating waffles, playing Arkanoid on SNES, and recording rotary dial telephones.

White Rabbits - Rudie Falls
With a certain joie de vive, playfulness and charm White Rabbits thematically evoke the more decadent and bygone era of days spent on the green, old cinemas “Tourist Trap”, tragic mothers “Navy Wives”, and restrained, but no less awkward domestic disputes, with the first single, “The Plot.”

A great array of tunes I believe and I haven't really stopped listening to it all week! I must be getting better at this or there are more artists putting out more fantastic music!!

Just thought I'd drop you a little bonus Mixtape in between the regular. This mixtape is 6 tracks from artists I know and respect from back home in Melbourne, Australia. Some are gaining themselves quite a following and some are looking for more people to experience their music. Dallas Frasca - Strong Man (Feat. Xavier Rudd)
Frasca's distinctive, gutsy, heart-felt vocal style is of uncommon strength, maybe it came down the line of blood from a relative of hers, famous Opera Singer, DAME NELLIE MELBA (who appears on the AUS $100 note). Her chunky slide guitar grooves are earning her respect from fellow musicians and been wowing crowds all over Australia. In just 3 years she has achieved more than most musicians could hope for in a lifetime. Stepping in the shoes of legendary Australian rock singer, Peter Garrett, Dallas has fronted Midnight Oil and Violent Femme's bass player, Brian Ritchie as well as touring the Australian country with Xavier Rudd.

Dallas comes from a background of singing with roots bands. She moved away from home and begun singing at the Saphire Coast town of Pambula, N.S.W, with some friends jamming. Re-locating back to her stomping ground, Wangaratta, NE Victoria, she worked rotating day/night 12 hour shifts as a Laboratory Technician for nearly 6 years on and off. In almost solitary confinement for the 12 hours, she learned to sing by listening to vocalists on the small transistor radio in the lab.

Kelly McCabe - Seedy Days
Kelly McCabe hails from a small town in the North East of Victoria. "A little like an Aussie Jewel - minus the bogan twangs of Missy Higgins - plus a sense of humour most emo kids would die for." - Natalie Kotsios Journalist

Lee Rosser - Breathe
There is a certain stubborness needed to be an artist untouched by the inevitable lure of commercial short term gain. Few however, take it to the extremes that Lee Rosser does.

Growing much of his own food and living in a house he built himself from mostly recycled materials, many of the ideas and philosophies contained in “Giving Yourself Away” are based on the process of supporting yourself and the compromises needed to do it.

This debut solo record from the former "Rambunctious" frontman has the rare quality of working as well in the studio as it does live. Blessed with a three octave vocal range, and grooving right hand the album uses only voice, guitar, and drums (Nicky Bomba). The result is a far cry from the normal singer/songwriter spangle jangle. By using minimal effects and overdubs it has a very upfront, percussive feel.

A definite slow burner for 2008/9.

Matt Chapman - After All The Words
Matt Chapman is quite the Folk singer. After honing his abilities in smaller alternative bands he branched out onto his own stage to deliver what some have said to be the best voice in Australian Folk music. A strong following of all things spiritual, Matt delivers amazing lyrics over soothing acoustic guitar. With the inclusion of a vast array of classical instruments Matt's music is something to behold.

Ryder - Others
When Jade Myconos sings, it’s a unique sound, both alluring and powerful, the songs beg for your attention, equally matched by the sound of the boys in her band. This is the sound of Ryder. Based in Melbourne but originally from North-East Victoria, their brand of ‘Urban Roots’ encompasses blues, country, folk and pop, has been impressing audiences at pubs and festivals across Victoria for the past 2 years.

Slipping into the scene in 2005 with a self titled duo EP, featuring Jade and the inspiring Greg Whitehead (Matt Joe Gow Band) on acoustic guitar, bottle neck slide, lap steel and vocals, Ryder immediately received regular airplay on Triple J’s ‘Roots n All’ and community radio Australia wide.

Soon after the EPs release, the Ryder sound was rounded out with the addition of double and electric bassist, Trent McKenzie (The Bentleys, Fourth Floor Collapse, Cat Walker & the Male Models) and the stick and brushwork of Mark Aird on drums.

Storme - I Should Know
Storme is an experienced and powerful singer, songwriter and guitarist and a West Australian Academy Of Performing Arts graduate.

Her second album/debut album "Images Of Reality" shows influences from Sarah McLaughlan with her angelic harmonising and captivating moments. Also, a hint of Bonnie Raitt's cool yet blues and country rock based structures and , for those with a keen ear, the subtle yet intriguing cool blue sounds of Rickie Lee Jones.

Combined with her third release "Gone To Freedom", she presents passionate but serious vocals with an attitude to encompass and satisfy the listener.

So there you go. A little bonus for you. Personally I think they are all great artists but that could just be me being biased! Check them out for yourselves and let me know what you think. I'm sure you will like them too.

Number 5 is ALIVE!!!!

Hi guys and gals.

Quite strange to believe that we are up to the 5th Mixtape already! I'm really enjoying finding all this new stuff to listen to. I've found some real gems in amongst it all. Mixtape #5 is no different. Once again there is 12 new bands with 12 new songs. A tasty little foundation to lay future Mixtape's on. So I best not ramble on much longer and let you get to the good stuff.

An Horse is a two-person indie pop band from Brisbane, Australia, comprising Kate Cooper of Iron On on vocals and guitar and Damon Cox of Intercooler and Mary Trembles on drums.

Immaculate Machine
Immaculate Machine are a Canadian indie pop band from Victoria, British Columbia. The band's name is taken from the lyrics of "One-Trick Pony" from the album One-Trick Pony by Paul Simon.

Kevin Devine
Kevin Devine is an American songwriter and musician from Brooklyn, New York, who is known for alternately introspective and political lyrics and melodic acoustic guitar tunes. He cites his influences as Bob Dylan, Elliott Smith, Guns N' Roses, Brother Paramo and Nirvana, among others.

Welcome to the Wunderkammer. Pop music with a bow, a present from Reykjavik and from Sindri Mar Sigfusson. A present that he gave to us and especially to himself. A surprise album, a search game in terms of pop music.

Swan Lake
Swan Lake is a Canadian indie supergroup comprising Carey Mercer of Frog Eyes, Daniel Bejar of Destroyer, Hello, Blue Roses and The New Pornographers, and Spencer Krug of Wolf Parade, Sunset Rubdown and Frog Eyes.

The Wooden Birds
Andrew Kenny is a native Texan who after nearly six years in Brooklyn, NY has returned to beautiful Austin, TX. He's best known as the singer/songwriter behind mellow indie favorites the American Analog Set.

Wry
Probably best known by London gig-goers as the posse behind regular Wednesday club Goonite at the Buffalo Bar in Islington, Wry actually began life many moons ago, back in their homeland of Brazil.

Hi Listeners.

Richard Baker once said that the discovery of song and the creation of musical instruments both owed their origin to a human impulse which lies much deeper than conscious intention: the need for rhythm in life… the need is a deep one, transcending thought, and disregarded at our peril. It's a quote that bounces around my head quite a lot. You have everything if you have music. You have emotions that outlast words. You have a way to escape from the day to day chores of life. You have meaning in song. You have a platform to share without it seeming like you are giving too much away. You have it all when you have music.

With say that I now present you with Mixtape #4. Another collection of songs that have taken me, and hopefully you, to another place. A feeling inside that is too hard to describe. New sounds which equate to new emotions.

Attack In Black
Attack in Black’s music merges old school rock and roll with modern day punk rock. In some respects, their sound resembles popular forms of melodic, aggressive or energetic punk rock. The band has also been influenced by unlikely sources from Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young, to Refused and Ramones, to Henry Miller and Charles Bukowski.

Beep Beep
Beep Beep is a rock band from Omaha, Nebraska. The band was formed in July 2001 by Eric Bemberger and Chris Hughes, formerly of Saddle Creek group Gabardine.

Fanfarlo
Fanfarlo is a London-based indie pop band formed in 2006 by the Swedish musician Simon Balthazar. Utilising instruments such as the trumpet, violin and mandolin as well as more commonplace instruments such as guitars and drums, they produce carefully arranged and infectious pop songs that are both uplifting and beautifully orchestrated.

Grizzly Bear
Grizzly Bear's sound is categorized as experimental rock, folk rock, or just indie rock, and is most dominated by the use of acoustic guitars and vocal harmonies.

In-Flight Safety
In-Flight Safety is a Canadian indie rock group, currently based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The group consists of vocalist and guitarist John Mullane, keyboardist Daniel Ledwell, bassist Brad Goodsell and drummer Glen Nicholson.

Joe Boden
Joe Boden was born in Chicago and raised in the UK. His music is acoustic alternative pop, delivered with smooth and thoughtful lyrics.

Radio Moscow is a psychedelic blues rock band. After approaching Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, the band managed to sign themselves to Dan's home recording studio Alive Records. Auerbach also produced their eponymous debut album, released in 2007.

Jherek Bischoff AKA Ribbons doesn’t have a huge portfolio, but he was Jamie Stewart’s main collaborator on his best record - Xiu Xiu’s Fabulous Muscles.

Southeast Engine
Southeast Engine is an indie-folk-rock outfit from Athens, Ohio.

tUnE-yArDs
In and around 2007 Merrill Garbus creates tUnE-yArDs. She thought the exasperating capitalization will buy her some time. Sampling snippets of her life as a nanny on Martha’s Vineyard and later as a young musician in noisy urban settings, she weaved sounds together to make substantial rhythms and then layered her ukulele and vocals over top.

Hey there fellow music lovers!

Well week 3 is upon us and it's been a good week. Some of the more popular bands are beginning to release new albums and there is some really good stuff from the up and comer's too! So this little mix will contain a little bit from column A and a little bit from column B.

There is nothing more satisfying than finding a new band or singer/songwriter and sharing it with others to listen to. I've had a chance look at that blip.fm and although I do like the concept, I find it hard to share the newest of new music. I will keep keeping on with it until I can find a way around it, but in the meantime just enjoy these tunes and if you have any rec's for me don't hesitate to drop me a line. I'm always looking for the perfect song!

Hi all.

So this be the first mixtape in "The Week Of Sound" blog. Below is a short description of each artist and then a link to the mixtape. Since this is my first try at doing all of this, things may go wrong. It may all go right but we will see. So take a few minutes to read about the artists and then download the Mixtape.

I'm sure we will agree that it is not a bad bunch of songs at all!!

Akron/Family
Akron/Family is a folk-influenced experimental rock band that formed in 2002.

Crystal Antlers
Crystal Antlers is an American indie rock band from Long Beach, California.

Department Of Eagles
Department of Eagles is a band formed in 2001 by two friends. The duo's music combines folk, electronica and other influences.

Elysian Fields
Elysian Fields is a New York dream pop/art rock band founded in 1995 by co-composers Jennifer Charles (vocals, instruments) and Oren Bloedow (guitar).

The Joy Formidable
The Joy Formidable are a three-piece band from North Wales, now living in London. They describe their music as "Epic, melodic, hand-shandy pop from a band who understand the true joys of life"

The Love Language
The Love Language are a Indie/Folk/Psychedelic band with easy to listen to pop songs.

Matt & Kim
Matt and Kim is a punk/dance duo from Brooklyn, New York, formed in 2004 by Matt Johnson (vocals/keyboards) and Kim Schifino (drums/vocals).

The Middle East
The Middle East were an exciting, original, beautiful band from Townsville, Queensland Australia.
They played Ambient Post-Rock Folk and their live shows often created a very dream like atmosphere.

Patients
Patients is a side project for Ben Cooper (Radical Face, Electric President). It is an acoustic, dreamy sound that floats along.

Said The Whale
Said the Whale is a Vancouver based indie rock band started by Ben Worcester and Tyler Bancroft. Their sound is Alternative Indie with lots of amazing sounds.

The Veils
The Veils are a London based band, fronted by lead singer/songwriter, Finn Andrews.

The William Blakes
The William Blakes are a Alternative Indie Rock band coming straight out of Denmark.
